Remove Smell from Activewear: 5 Ways to Skip the Wash
4mins read
If you washed your gym leggings after every single workout, you'd be doing laundry every other day. And your favourite activewear would be pilled, faded, and headed for the bin within six months. The good news? You don't actually need to wash gym clothes after every use if they're not properly soiled or sweat-drenched.
I know what you're thinking. But what about the smell? Fair question. Here's how to refresh gym clothes without washing them into an early grave whilst keeping them genuinely fresh.
The Air-Dry Method (Yes, Really)
This is the simplest trick and it works surprisingly well. After your workout, don't ball up your kit and shove it in your gym bag for three days. Instead, turn everything inside out and hang it somewhere with good airflow. A shower rail works brilliantly, or drape items over a clothes horse near an open window.
Why inside out? Because that's where the sweat actually is. Letting moisture evaporate properly prevents bacteria from throwing a party in your sports bra. I'd say give it at least four hours, ideally overnight. You'll be amazed how much this alone can freshen workout clothes naturally.
Fabric Refreshers that's good for sport
Sometimes airing isn't quite enough, especially if you've done hot yoga or a particularly sweaty spin class. This is where a proper fabric refresher comes in handy.

A few spritzes on the inside of your gear after airing can genuinely remove smell from activewear without a full wash. Look for formulas designed for technical fabrics rather than standard fabric sprays, which can leave residue or interfere with moisture-wicking properties.
When You Actually Do Need to Wash
Right, let's set some boundaries. You should wash after:
-
Heavy sweat sessions: if you've properly drenched your clothes, wash them. No amount of spritzing will save you.
-
Visible stains or dirt: mud from outdoor training, makeup transfers, or anything your gym floor left behind.
-
The sniff test fails: if it smells funky even after airing, trust your nose.
-
After three wears maximum: even lightly worn pieces need proper cleaning eventually.
Wash Smarter, Not Harder
When you do wash, treat your technical fabrics kindly. Cold water on a delicate or sports cycle prevents elastic breakdown and colour fading. Skip fabric softener entirely - it coats fibres and ruins moisture-wicking abilities. Instead, use a sport-specific detergent and add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle if odours are lingering.

Never tumble dry unless the care label explicitly says you can. High heat destroys elastane, warps synthetic fibres, and generally murders the fit of your favourite pieces. Air drying might take longer, but your gym wardrobe will thank you.
The Storage Situation
How you store gym clothes between wears matters too. Don't leave damp kit in your bag or car boot. If you can't air it immediately, at least take it out of the bag when you get home. Some people keep a small mesh laundry bag specifically for "worn but not dirty" activewear - it keeps things separate whilst allowing airflow.

My advice? Build a rotation of gym basics so you're not desperately refreshing the same sports bra three days running. Having four or five key pieces means you can air items properly between wears whilst still having clean kit ready.
