Patchouli
Overview
Patchouli, with its pungent, earthy, and exotic aroma, is steam-distilled from the dried, fermented leaves of Pogostemon patchouli or Pogostemon cablin. This three-foot-tall perennial bush, adorned with white flowers tinged with purple or mauve, produces a rich, amber to dark-brown oil that improves with age. Native to tropical Asia, patchouli is widely cultivated in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore, with oil production also prevalent in Burma, India, and South America.
Emotional Effect
Patchouli oil is renowned for its ability to diminish depression and ease anxiety. It aids recovery from nervous exhaustion and stress-related conditions, reduces mental fatigue, and alleviates lethargy. In small doses, it acts as a sedative, while larger amounts are stimulating. Patchouli oil sharpens intelligence, enhances concentration, and offers insight. It cools and calms in stressful situations, stabilising emotions and boosting libido with its aphrodisiac properties.
