Neroli and Orange
Overview
Neroli, known for its sweet citrus aroma with slightly spicy and bitter undertones, is derived from the delicate white blossoms of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium, Citrus bigaradia, or Citrus vulgaris). This evergreen tree, which grows 20 to 30 feet tall, features glossy dark-green leaves and small white flowers that bloom in May and October. One ton of hand-picked blossoms yields just one quart of neroli oil, making it a costly essential oil. Native to central Asia and China, bitter orange trees are now cultivated in subtropical regions worldwide, including California, Mexico, South America, and Mediterranean areas. The finest neroli oil is said to come from Tunisia.
