Sandalwood
Overview
Sandalwood (Santalum album) is a slow-growing evergreen that reaches up to 30 feet in height over several decades. Its leathery leaves and vibrant red to yellow blossoms thrive in tropical climates, particularly in India, the largest producer of sandalwood oil. The heartwood of mature sandalwood trees, especially those from Mysore, is steam-distilled to produce a golden-yellow oil known for its sweet, woody, and exotic fragrance. Sandalwood oil is prized for its rich, velvety scent, requiring about 25 pounds of heartwood to yield just one pound of oil.
Emotional Effects
Sandalwood calms the mind, alleviating stress, anxiety, and irritability. Its soothing properties elevate mood, combat depression, and promote emotional stability. Often used in aromatherapy, it encourages clarity, compassion, and social openness while helping to overcome nervousness and confusion. Renowned as an aphrodisiac, sandalwood oil also aids in overcoming emotional barriers and enhancing sensuality.
